The impetus behind my book is simple. As the title implies, the word 'nostalgia' is a longing for the past, a longing for a simpler way of life. Since we, as humans, long for things that have been either lost or in disrepair, nostalgia remains a hollow term with diminished returns. But, I suggest that these desires for simplicity have a didactic purpose that transcends the very fabric of our society: nostalgia helps remind us of what we still have in the now and encourages us to cherish those entities that are easily taken for granted. How does one begin to derive this simplicity from a society steeped in the complexities of technological advancement? In order to answer this question, I suggest that we go back to our primitive upbringings in nature's womb. Here, the naturally sculpted 'womb' serves as the vehicle for caring and compassion, a place where life draws upon the nourishment Mother Nature affords. If we are to confront the world's problems and become part of the solution, we must do so in a spirit of the moment, out of a love for listening and the goodness of hope and humanity. Book includes 50 poems, 28 B and W pictures and 7 chapters covering: .spiders, butterflies, bees and ants .birds, moose and squirrels .trees, streams, rain and the sun .catching a cold, sleeping, winter and the week .death and artists and criteques about progress and this planet .

The Culturally Inclusive Educator asks educators to consider what they can do differently to create a welcoming, inclusive, and exciting environment for the 21st century. Based on the author's national research and consulting work, this book examines the discrepancy between the current educational cultural climate and the need for educators and their institutions to prepare for a growing multicultural population. It asks what constitutes effective preparation, and provides guidance on overcoming personal and institutional challenges to cultural inclusiveness (stereotype threats, microaggressions, colorblindness/identity-blindness, implicit bias, among others). Samuels begins with the challenges facing the higher education community and then offers 8 transformative steps to help build cultural inclusiveness that any educator teaching any subject can utilize to increase their effectiveness. Culturally inclusive leadership is highlighted as the model for educators and institutions to embrace to become successful in today's world.
Informed by her in-depth ethnomusical knowledge, the result of detailed fieldwork, Mans's book is about musical worlds and how we as people inhabit them. The book asserts that an understanding of our musical worlds can be a transformative educational tool that could have a significant role to play in multicultural music and arts education. She explores the way in which musical expression, with its myriad cultural variations, reveals much about identity and cultural norms, and shows how particular musical sounds are aesthetically related to these norms. The author goes further to suggest that similar systems can be detected across cultures, while each world remains colored by a distinctive soundscape. Mans also looks at the way each cultural soundscape is a symbolic manifestation of a society's collective cognition, sorting musical behavior and sounds into clusters and patterns that fulfill each society's requirements. She probes the fact that in today's globalized and mobile world, as people move from one society to another, cross-cultural acts and hybrids result in a number of new aesthetics. Finally, in addition to three personal narratives by musicians from different continents, the author has invited scholars from diverse specializations and locations to comment on different sections of the book, opening up a critical dialogue with voices from different parts of the globe. Musical categorization, identity, values, aesthetic evaluation, creativity, curriculum, assessment and teacher education are some of the issues tackled in this manner.
